Theme

Rooftop

JipangMUCK is a restricted-themed role playing environment. That is to say, it isn’t a free for all, where anything a player can imagine can possibly happen. The setting caters to certain types of characters better than others. A modicum of realism, degree of seriousness, et cetera. While JipangMUCK is targeted to both video game characters as well as ones from anime, flagrant displays of far out magic or incredible powers is not the idea here.

There will probably be a central themed storyline, often based on the games and anime the MUCK draws upon, but players are not required to participate if they chose not to, though they should be at least vaguely aware of what’s going on, for a cohesive feel in their RP involving others.

So what IS the theme, anyway? JipangMUCK is intended to be a setting for historical Asian themed fantasy role playing; Samurai and ninja, miko and geisha, honor and vengeance. These, with traces of arcane magic behind the stranger things going on, are all a part of what makes our setting. While I include the word ‘fantasy’ there, that should not be taken to mean that anything goes. There are limitations. Characters will not be leaping over tall buildings in a single bound, losing a limb only to shrug it off, creating magical effects capable of wiping out cities on a whim, and so on.

The Moon

There are, however, some exceptions warranted. Most warrior characters will be allowed higher stamina than one would expect from a normal human being, magical healing will be available to some degree, from characters that have the ability to do so, and evil villains that spend a significant time in preparation will be able to concoct powerful attacks capable of causing mass destruction.

To sum up the discussion on characters’ power levels, characters from things such as the Samurai Spirits games, Kenshin, and most other video game characters that fit the theme are right in line with the level of power characters will be allowed. Many characters in Fushigi Yuugi and other series may require some toning down in order to fit in correctly. Those designing originals should likewise put care into not allotting their character more power than would be appropriate.

What you do with your character after joining is largely up to you as long as you keep the theme in mind. If something you consider doing is questionable, you’re welcome to run it by the staff beforehand in order to avoid any nasty conflicts.

From here, there are separate links which will take you to topics of relevance or interest to the theme as a whole. It's recommended that you read all the available files as well as the history so you have a feel for Jipang's theme.
